My Students

I am a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, and my students are faced with all sorts of challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I try my best to make sure that our school is a place where they can learn and feel safe.

Simply put, my kids are awesome.

They like to move; they love math and science and love lots of positive attention. Many of them are being raised in single-parent households or by grandparents and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic status. These things may prevent them from getting ahead early in life and, unfortunately, may not provide them with the life experiences many of us see as "normal." From the minute they walk in the door of my classroom, they become "my babies." I can't control what happens once they leave me, but I can certainly make sure that their time with me is meaningful.

My Project

Everyone knows the feeling of being hungry. It's no fun at all! You get tired, you get irritated, and all you can do is think about what you want to eat. My soon to be 4th graders will be going to lunch this year at 10:45 in the morning and school doesn't get out until 3:00. That's a long time for their little bellies to go without any food. With that said, I would like to use your donations to be able to stock the classroom, for a little bit, with snacks that the kids could consume in the afternoons including pretzels and animal crackers.
