My students need a classroom library of non-fiction texts. They are fascinated with learning, especially science and history. These books provide great illustrations and photography that will captivate their interests.
My classroom consists of nine special learners with social, emotional, and behavioral needs. Most of my students are labeled with 'emotional disturbance.' Their day at school is often an escape from their home life that consists of unimaginable hardships.
Despite these unique hardships and emotional disability, my students continually impress me with their resilience, generosity, and compassion.
I've personally observed my students offering friendship to a lonely student sitting on the buddy bench at recess, holding an umbrella for a staff member standing in the rain, and supporting their school through beautification efforts.
My Project
My nine special education students are so curious to explore their world, but lack great informational texts. The Smithsonian collection will help fill the gap by providing encyclopedias that are kid friendly with excellent imagery that will captivate their interests.
I fully expect that these books will spark a curiosity that will further their interest in becoming lifelong learners.
The books will open their world to space exploration, the elements of our world, animal science, important events in history, inventions, the human body, caring for our environment, and so much more. For students that often have a difficulty starting a chapter book, I know these books will be highly used and hold the attention of even my most reluctant readers!
