My fifth grade students will be embarking on a new experience this year! They will be moving from room to room for subject areas. Students will come to me for one section of their reading. During the day, I will be able to impact about 150 students with reading instruction.
My fifth grade students come from a low-income home environment (or no home environment) typically with limited access to books, technology, and personal hygiene supplies.
I plan for my classroom to become a safe environment where they can escape into a good book. My hope is to help them feel clean, fed, and secure while with me.
When students' basic needs are not being met, they cannot focus on their learning. This project helps to support students who are in need of those essentials, often because they are homeless. The cushion, along with sheets and protector will give students a place to rest during downtime in the classroom, or after school as needed. The other comfortable items will help them to focus and provide comforts they may not receive at home. Many students who are homeless lack the comforts that many take for granted. The comfortable objects will provide them with comforts they may not get to experience. Students who are homeless need a place to feel comfortable and safe and my hope is that my classroom will be a sanctuary for them through this project.
Hungry children are unable to learn.
So, I have asked for snacks and personal hygiene items as well in order to assist them in taking care of their needs. Students come to school mid-way through the morning without breakfast. The snacks will help to provide them with nourishment until lunchtime occurs. Often times when children are homeless, they are also going without breakfast, proper nutrition, and hygiene products. My students who are homeless need these items because food and personal hygiene products are not readily accessible to them. They will know that materials are provided in our classroom through this project.
