Help me give my students a bookshelf full of diverse fiction, including The Underland Chronicles, The Misadventures of Edgar & Allen Poe, and many other fiction options.
I teach at a Title I school that serves a low-income community in Utah. My students come into school every day full of energy and excited to interact with their peers (they love to talk, is what I'm saying- they are 6th graders after all). They go the extra mile in including their classmates and looking after each other, and every day at least one of my students makes me smile with their kindness. In between lessons and tests we discuss the books they are reading, the card trick they're practicing, how football went on the weekend, what media they're consuming, and what their opinions are on current events.
It is my deepest teacher wish to instill curiosity, empathy, and critical thinking skills in my students.
In our classroom, I want students to know how valuable they are.
My Project
My students are inundated with informative nonfiction, which is great! We want to shift our focus more to analyzing fiction for the remainder of the year, and my students have exhausted the supply on my bookshelf.
I would like my students to have access to more stories with diverse, strong characters for our remaining language arts this year as we move into theme, inference, and pushing our understanding beyond the pages of a text.
Every year in October, we analyze "The Tell Tale Heart" by Edgar Allan Poe. I hope to spark an interest in reading beyond our unit by providing access to "The Misadventures of Edgar and Allan Poe". I would like to give my numerous English Language Learners another book option with a Spanish version of "The House on Mango Street". I have several avid fantasy readers that, in their 6th year at our school, have exhausted our school library's options. I hope to give them more material with The Overlander series.
