Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students from my class are all new to America less than two years. They come from countries all over the world, most of them refugees from Africa and Syria. There are also some from Mexico and Central America, Guatemala. They are all working very hard to learn the English language and learn about American traditions, responsibilities, and rules. Almost 80% of the students have had no written formal education, making learning a new language extra difficult and writing a challenge in of itself. Our school has a specialized program to serve these neediest students in the best capacity possible, providing a rich and rigorous English curriculum for 3 class periods per day as well as access to grade level Math, Physical Education, Science, and Art. This mainstream integration approach is new to the district and working very well, allowing students to receive instruction from multiple teachers yet provide a strong foundation of English. Even though the school is located in one of the most impoverished and high crime neighborhoods in the district, the international center students are some of the most hardworking and resilient students in the entire school. I oversee the international center and instruction.
My Project
"One Fish Two Fish" by Dr. Seuss is one of my students' favorite books and an American classic. I would like every student to learn how to read it fluently and keep the book at home to read to their family.
They will be proud to own it, I'm sure they will treasure the book forever.
Most of the students do not have any books of their own and would be thrilled to keep this book at home after completing the first year of school in America!
Please see more information about the class in the class description. Thanks for helping inspire reading and rewarding hard work towards literacy!
