Fatalism and the American Dream: Books to Inspire Future Leaders
My students need additional copies of two books about success and the American Dream. These are two books that really resonate with high school students, so I would like more students to have access to them.
My students come from a small, rural community. Many of the students have parents who also graduated from the same high school, so tradition is important to everyone. They come from all kinds of social and economic backgrounds, but one thing they have in common is the hard-working attitude consistent with rural communities.
They make my job more than a job - they make it my passion.
It's my pleasure to show up to work every day to help them be the best they can be. I wouldn't want to work anywhere else.
My Project
During the course of their high school career here, students have the opportunity to read many different novels, in the hope that they will be able to take something out of those books and learn from them. Two books that have had a profound impact on my students are The Other Wes Moore by Wes Moore and The Freedom Writers' Diary by Erin Gruwell. Both books are true stories that open the eyes of my students to the world outside small town Wisconsin. I've had many students comment on how much the books have impacted their lives, showing them just how lucky they really are to be born and live in a community where they don't need to worry about any number of things that the people in the books worry about every single day.
However, we don't have enough access to these books, so the number of students who have the opportunity to be impacted by these books is much lower than I would like.
The small number of copies we currently have I have bought with my own money. In a time of budget constraints in public education, there just isn't enough to go around and meet all the needs of teachers and students alike. I am hoping that with your help, I can bring this impactful reading experience to more students in our high school and open their eyes to what life is like outside our community.
