Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students require the help of an adult to manage their clothing fasteners. This applies each time they take off or put on their shoes, sweater, coat or backpack during school routines, transitions, recess, or when using the restroom.
These students are part of the Department of Education's special education program, in which a student has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
They receive occupational therapy as a related service, to help them access the curriculum. These students want to fit in and feel respected by their same-age peers. They want to be self-reliant and socially adept. They are part of a school that nurtures exploration and mastery of skills. And they are good-hearted, sensitive students who want to feel successful in class and in life.
My Project
For student with special education needs, dressing and fastener skills need to be taught step-by-step, in a manner that builds the pre-requisite skills of gross/fine motor coordination, balance, visual perception, stereognosis (navigating objects using the sense of touch), and awareness of body schema such as their right and left, top and bottom, front and back. Additionally, training activities must be fun and engaging, graded to the student's abilities, with the just-right challenge for the student to feel successful each and every time they practice.
The multimedia training kits would be sensory stimulating and matched to the students' needs for grading from easy to difficult. Techniques such as backward chaining will be incorporated, to increase feelings of success and completion. For snaps, buttons, and zippers, they'd practice on vests. For shoelaces, they progress from boards to shoe model. They'd then reinforce their new-found skills by practicing on their own clothing.
With these adaptive fastener training tools, my students' acquisition of independence during class activities, lessons, and routines will be accelerated.
This will help boost their confidence.
Additionally, teachers' time, attention, and resources will be freed to focus on actual teaching and nurturing the emotional needs of the students. This will enrich the classrooms.
