As a reading, language arts, and science teacher, I'm constantly on the lookout for high-interest non-fiction books that kids can really sink their teeth into. If you know Eric Schlosser's "Fast Food Nation," then you'll appreciate the diverse appeals this text offers. My students have one copy in our classroom library, and I'd like to have 9 more copies for use in my guided reading small groups. The materials I'm asking for are as follows: 1) 9 (nine) copies of Fast Food Nation by Eric Schlosser. Students will develop their own inquiry projects, polls, blogs, or reports in response to studying the text. Students will focus on a specific aspect of the fast-food "story," such as workers' experience, health effects, its history, meat-processing industry, artificial flavorings, etc. Students will also use existing technologies such as our research databases to collect data and publish annotate bibliographies for each inquiry project. I want my students to be more aware of the nutrition perils out there, as well as the options. I'd like for them to know about the workforce, the use of low-wage, low-skill labor, and inspire them to create projects preventing the abuse of fast-food as a lifestyle choice. In sum, I want my students to become more aware of the impact fast food has on our culture and ourselves.
