Help me give my students the best virtual education by funding fast and current technological devices and accessories, like the Macbook Pro, to replace slow and dated devices.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are African-American male students from the economically disadvantaged areas of Baltimore City. They are 9th-12th grade students who are competitive and energetic. They come to class with full of enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. Although some of them appear to be tech savy with their experience in playing mobile games, they generally lack computer literacy.
As eager as they are to learn, they are also easily frustrated with things that are out of their control, such as crashing or slow laptops, both on their part and the part of the teacher.
They get impatient and frustrated with the slow and lagging computer that their teacher is using during virtual learning instructions. But with the right technology at hand, they easily get along.
My students love to learn. They engage well during live session and appreciate the classroom demonstrations I make while I share my screen during my presentation. But often times, because of the dated computer provided by my school district that I am using, presentation lags or freezes, and I would have to log off and restart my computer. Fortunately, when I get back on after several minutes, some students remain in the virtual meeting, but others, have logged off and would not return, perhaps because of frustration. As a preventive measure, I would even restart my computer a few hours before the start of class, but my computer would still eventually run slow, and it would take forever to open applications or even shift browser tabs, and would even freeze at some point.
So the downtime that my classes are experiencing because of the dated devices I am using is taking a toll on their virtual learning.
They are not having a continuous learning and their idle time is increasing. They are being deprived of the education that they deserve to get. This project aims to give my students continuous and unimpeded virtual learning. It is my hope that by having this fast and powerful Macbook Pro and other accessories to help me teach more effectively, I will be able to provide an excellent if not seamless virtual education to my students.
