Help me give my students a fashion studio with professional equipment like a sewing machine and a serger and organizational containers for our fabric supplies.
My students are enthusiastic and ready to make art every day when they enter my classroom. These students are studio artists that have auditioned and been accepted into a specialized public art high school to pursue their passion in the visual arts, specifically fashion design and sewing.
In this class, my students learn how to illustrate and sew fashion designs and objects.
The students learn how to design artwork using the human body as their form. They learn about the fashion industry, traditional design standards, as well as how to be inclusive to multiple body types, gender identifications, ages, and aesthetic preferences with their clothing design and wearable objects. We also learn how building basic patterns requires design for a function and construct fashion objects with hand and machine stitching!
My Project
This sewing machine and serger, as well as the organizational materials will allow students to practice using the technology standard in the fashion industry to create fashion objects, and alter and repair clothing. Gaining a basic understanding of how to safely use a sewing machine and serger will help students be able to create their fashion design ideas, understand how the clothing they wear is produced, and prepare any students interested in pursuing careers in fashion be prepared for their college fashion courses. Students show a high interest in learning how to create fashion objects, but we have do not have enough machines to support the entire class. The more machines we can acquire, the more we can build machine sewing permanently into the Fashion curriculum!
