Help me give my students new sensory tools to use in the sensory room. The compartment shelf would be perfect for toy storage. The weighted lap pad would be a great benefit for most of the students.
I work with special education students who have sensory needs and would benefit greatly from the use of our new sensory room. My students need a quiet place where they can relieve stress, anger, and any other feelings from the day. My kids enjoy playing with fidgets, laying in bean bags for relaxing, swinging, and even just having a quiet place to mellow out. I want this Sensory Room to be a safe place for my students to open up and be themselves.
My Project
Farmington Central DIST. 265 has made room for a new Sensory Room this year in the Junior High. The sensory room is home to many students k-12. Students use the room daily to calm down, take a break and relax. Sensory play is actually a very important part of a students day. Research shows that sensory play builds nerve connections in the brain's pathways, which lead to a child's ability to complete more complex learning tasks. Sensory play supports language development, cognitive growth, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving skills, and social interaction. Not only is it great for the brain, it's beneficial to some students because they need a therapeutic space with a variety of equipment that provides them with personalized sensory input. Having a sensory space helps these children calm and focus themselves so they can be better prepared for learning and interacting with others.
