Every day in my class is a new and EXCITING challenge! I work with middle-schoolers! I am very fortunate that my school provides our students with the opportunity for an "Enrichment Class", once per week for 45 minutes. The students are allowed to choose from high interest courses, so learning becomes FUN!
This is the first time that Farm Studies has been offered, I had over 90 students request to take it!
They are so motivated and eager to learn. On the first day of class they were so excited and asking so many questions about different projects we could do this year. Many of these students have never been around a farm so they cannot wait to hatch baby chicks and interact with farm animals that guest speakers will share with us.
My Project
I am offering this class so that students will have an opportunity to learn about farms and the work that goes into a successful farm business. This class is part of an enrichment program my school offers. Students are presented with the list of classes available, so all of the students I am working with have a desire to learn more about these topics, they are not just "assigned" another class. I recently created a project that was fully funded, that project provided our class with an incubator, brooder and planter boxes. The materials included in this project will further allow my students to explore farms and farm animals. The books I chose are middle school level books that are about horses. I also included some art materials that the students can use with the horseshoes that a local farrier donated to our class. I asked for some soil, pots, herb seeds and a mini-greenhouse for the students to be able to start growing their own plants. I have arranged for guest speakers to share knowledge with us, however, these materials will be used directly in our class for hands-on learning about animals and plants associated with farms.
