Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
"Tell me and I forget, teach me and I may remember, involve me and I learn." The popular adage from Benjamin Franklin describes my classes' mission to get involved in their learning.
In a school of 550, the demographics of our students are a microcosm of the outside world and truly represent diversity.
Students come from a variety of backgrounds and speak many languages at home. They bring a world of unique experiences and knowledge to school with them every day. However, with a free and reduced price lunch rate of nearly 75%, students sometimes lack the needed resources for success.
My Project
This field trip to a historical, working farm will further expand the experiences students bring to school. Learning about plants, animals, and the history of agriculture will give students an opportunity to deepen their understanding of the world around them. Additionally, the related science, social studies, and academic language topics that will accompany the excursion will increase students' understanding of the fourth grade curriculum.
The experiential learning that occurs during a field trip cannot be replaced by even the best in-class lesson.
By providing these students the opportunity to visit a historical farm, donors are providing lifelong learning and memories. Students from our school lack the resources to take trips like these on their own. This trip will allow students to build background knowledge about important grade level topics and immerse themselves in learning!
