"An educated person makes a better person." - Harvey L. Harris (my father) (1941-2013) My name is Mark A. Harris and I am a reading teacher. I work diligently to mold my students into becoming readers. For me, it is important for them to understand the world that they don't experience everyday.
My students are ready, willing, and able to become better than their circumstances.
Although many of them do not have the best amenities money can buy, they have intelligence and character. They come to school each and every day ready to learn (even when they are not feeling their best). So, I owe it to them to give them what they deserve. Yet, I want to expose them to ideals, situations, and stories that are not always their own. They need to see how different things were/are before them. Still, they will have the chance to make connections to texts, see the connections that the text has with them personally, and make connections to other situations across the globe. This is one of the main purposes of reading: to connect different people on a common wavelength.
My students will use these materials in a myriad of ways: Book study: In order to fully immerse a student into reading, they have to actually stick with a text and gain everything there is to gain from it. They have to understand the figurative language, the jargon, the themes, and even the history of what they are reading. The book study of Farewell to Manzanar will provide this. Group assignments: Collaboration is important in the classroom. As such, I will have my lessons structured so there will be plenty of room for cooperative learning stations, activities, and challenges. Presentations and Projects: My students will do projects and presentations (of said projects) to the classroom. This will assist in fostering creativity and being able to speak in front of groups.
Donations for this project would improve my classroom by giving assistance in providing worthwhile reading experiences.
Also, it would give the children a chance to "explore themselves outside of themselves". They would gain an understanding of who they are through others. Plus, there is a historical reference point to be considered in this project. Thus, donating to this project will reassure the value of education as a tool for self improvement and realization.Read More
