My students are fifth-graders in a rural school in Wisconsin. They enjoy reading books of all types. We spend a large portion of our day using literature to help us explore new concepts in both reading and writing workshop.
It always amazes me how my students can use a few quality books to help them enhance and improve their reading and writing skills.
We use mentor texts to help us learn and practice new strategies to push ourselves to be better readers and writers daily. This is hard work, but my students always tackle our reading and writing workshop time with enthusiasm and passion.
These fantasy books will be used during our reading workshop to introduce students to the fantasy genre. They will be reading the first two books in the series to compare and contrast characters, themes, and the author's craft in the novels.
These books will be used to build upon a previous reading unit earlier in the school year, where we read multiple realistic fiction books by the same author and learned how to compare and contrast the author's craft in those books.
The students will be learning about the elements of the fantasy genre and studying the complex plots that are present in fantasy books. They will also be practicing their abilities to discuss multiple components of books daily in their book club reading and discussion groups.
