Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of my students speak English as their second language which means that despite the incredible strides they have made, many still read below grade level. Most only received minimal ESL instruction and must persevere on grade level despite a significant learning gap. Yet they are avid readers and are eager to learn.
Although over 90% of my students receive free or reduced lunch, they are generous and giving.
They worry about me when I appear tired or stress. They organize trips together to the library to print papers if they don't have access to computers or printers. They share what they have and care about each others well being. They treat our school community like a family.
My students are voracious readers regardless of their reading level. My small class library is well loved and well worn. They like to recommend books for me to read, accept my recommendations and keep me hunting for a variety of titles to meet their curiosity and needs.
My Project
My students have to read independently inside and outside of my class. I encourage them to request books and titles so that I have books in stock that they enjoy. This project contains the most sought after titles and most requested books. This project has a number of series of books that I am anxious to have in my library because once a student gets hooked on one of the books they ended up reading a ton of them. I want to make sure that I have as many books series that help to satisfy their thirst for a new author.
The titles I have included are very popular, approachable and just not available in my classroom or in our district wide curriculum.
Our district wide curriculum, although rigorous, does not inspire us. My students (and I) find it quite serious and dry. The upside to this very difficult problem is that it helps me push independent reading. Because my students often loath what we read as part of the curriculum, I can encourage their rebellious nature by focusing on what they read for fun.
