This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help my students develop a passion for science and the outdoors through an incredible field trip! My school had the great fortune to be selected for a highly coveted spot at a 3-day adventure camp nestled in a beautiful redwood forest. The field trip is free, but unfortunately we can't afford the food for students to eat at the camp. Our school is a safe, caring, tight-knit community. It is a public middle school located in a sprawling urban area marred by poverty and gang violence. In spite of this, my students are filled with hope that they will be the first in their family to go to college. Some of my students have never left their neighborhood. Many have never been to the ocean, gone for a hike in the forest, or slept outside. I believe such experiences would truly enrich their lives.
My Project
This project will cover the cost of food for my students on an amazing field trip. My students would have the opportunity to hike in a redwood forest and see the open ocean. For many, it would be the first time. They could discover a passion for science as they examine banana slugs in their natural habitat. They could discover the origin of their food by making cheese, picking vegetables, and milking a goat on an organic farm. Last year, while leading this field trip, I was most profoundly affected by the way I saw students who struggled with behavior and academics in the classroom transform into leaders on the field trip. These students' hands would immediately shoot up at each opportunity to try something new. With resiliency, they would try again and again until they conquered a new challenge. And, with patience and kindness, they would encourage their classmates to do the same. Thanks to their successes on the field trip, these struggling students returned to the classroom with new-found confidence and motivation.
A donation to this project will provide my inner-city students with an experience that will truly enrich their lives.
For students in this community, it might be their only chance to see the ocean or walk in the forest. Perhaps this field trip will give them the courage to try new things in the future, perhaps they will be the first in their family to go to college, or maybe they will be inspired to study science. Please help me bring this life-changing experience to my students.
