Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Help me provide some awesome 6th, 7th and 8th grade students with a skill that will last them a lifetime: sewing! It is best to start out with easier projects when learning to sew-so we will be making flannel pajama bottoms-very popular and comfortable!!
I work in a high poverty school in a suburb outside of New York City.
The school cannot provide much in the way of extra-curricular activities for the students, so it is up to the teachers to provide enriching experiences. One of my colleagues is helping students write films, another is creating "math" games. One of my passions is sewing, so I decided to teach my students a skill that will benefit them for their entire lives. In addition, because most of my students live at a very low socioeconomic level, it will be great for them to be able to sew, and some day design, their own fashionable clothes. They will also be able to make window coverings, slipcovers, various toys, and anything else you can put together with a needle and thread. Thank you for reviewing my project !
My Project
My students will be making flannel pajama bottoms with these materials. Not a lot of seams, a simple waist band and straight sewing-so it's a good project to start off with. They will also be modeling their finished projects at a school wide show, where other students will be showcasing various projects they have worked on as well.
Let's send these girls into the world (or at least high school), with a skill they can use for the rest of their lives.
Imagine designing your own prom dress-or altering one to make it completely individualized. Some day, they will even want to make their own window treatments (this is how I got back into sewing after a too long hiatus). But for now the ability to make simple skirts, dresses and tops would really allow these girls to stretch out their wardrobes in a meaningful way.
