My school serves a population of students who are eager to learn and grow as students. Almost 60% of students in our school qualify for free or reduced-rate lunch. Most of our classes have mixtures of regular education students and special education students, as well as English-learners, all who accept and learn from one another.
Our sixth graders are full of energy and life.
They greet each day and take on new challenges in the hopes of growing as people and learners. It is our aim to educate and prepare these students for the world they will live in and work in making them college and career ready. We also strive to grow our students as humans with social and emotional skills.
My Project
As a literacy and writing teacher, I'm always looking to excite my students about reading and writing. I believe one of the great avenues to achieve this is through great stories! Our classroom bookshelf already has works by modern writers and is lacking in the area of classic works. There are many benefits to reading classic literature and it is my hope to expose my students to some of these works. I hope that exposing my secondary students to these works will set them on a path to love and enjoy literature throughout their life.
Through reading classic literature, students are exposed to aspects of world history and are encouraged to increase their own vocabulary and personal writing skills.
I have selected a variety of classics that are written at different levels. The variety of levels will allow students to read a book that challenges them, yet does not overwhelm them. Please consider giving to this project to bring some of the beloved classics into our classroom for my students to enjoy and love.
