Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
When you walk into my classroom, you will see my students working in pairs, in small groups and there is definitely a buzz. You will see students working on Chromebooks, iPad minis, and even personal smartphones. My students are used to using many different modalities to demonstrate their understanding. More than half of the students in our school come from low-income homes.
My students are a group of 7th and 8th graders who are English-language learners and Spanish-language learners.
They have been learning in both languages since kindergarten in our school, which is a K-8 grade school model.
My Project
Our school is a very old building that comes with its issues such as intermittent heat, no air conditioning, lead pipes, and more. Even though these issues persist, our students deserve as many opportunities to learn in the best possible conditions despite these problems.
We need high-quality fans to help in producing cool air in the classroom during the warm months of the year so that students can learn comfortably.
At the beginning and end of school, our classroom can feel like a sauna. The current fan we have are old, run down, and long past retirement. New oscillating fans will provide much needed cool air around the classroom. When the class is cool students can be more comfortable and learn rather than being left to sit in a heatwave fog unable to concentrate. The start of this year was brutal. Our classroom temperature rose to 91 degrees. We can't let this happen again.
We also need a drying rack to place the milkweed bugs' habitat as we learn about their life cycle during our Population and Ecosystem unit.
