My students need Math in a Flash! Discovery Cans and Building Fractions Activity Center to develop an understanding of math concepts in a game form, as well as, names for building fractions with different denominators.
My students come from all walks of life. They are sweet, kind, caring, and responsible. I am a Math Remediation Teacher who pulls small groups of students to gain a deeper understanding of math and achieve their full potential as mathematicians. Students learn best by hands on authentic math experiences that connect their learning to the real world. The population of students that I serve struggle with conceptual understanding of numbers and mathematical processes. My students need to use manipulatives and by working with their hands they can develop an understanding of many mathematical concepts that are abstract for a variety of learners.
"The quality of a leader is reflected in the standards they set for themselves," Ray Kroc.
Each child is accountable for their choices and showing others how to lead. In my class, we will work together to build mathematical understanding through cooperation, listening, and teaching each other with manipulatives.
When students become leaders they are role models for one another and allow each other to see they can do anything they set their minds to do! I want my students to be able to reach for the stars and realize with hard work anything is POSSIBLE!
My Project
These resources will greatly help the students I work with in a small group setting to build a concrete understanding of the concept we are working on. My groups have between six to twelve students who will have access to these materials for twenty to thirty minutes each time they come to group math. When students can see what math words mean and what fractions look like it helps to create that understanding.
When students build and work with manipulatives, it develops a deeper understanding for them to see what is really meant by a vocabulary word or concept.
Students really struggle with understanding parts of a fraction. The fraction kit will have the students building fractions, equivalent fractions, and making connections to what a fraction is and what an equivalent fraction would look like. The regrouping set would be great to show students what is means to borrow and regroup to make larger or smaller numbers based on adding or subtracting.
The fifth grade game kit will make reviewing math standards easy and fun for students. I also add an explanation piece to why the students answer the questions the way they do. This builds understanding of what the students need to know and shows me what we still need to practice and learn.
