Famous Fourth Grade Readers

My students need several copies of the Sunshine State Young Readers Award nominated books. We also need a set of classroom speakers to play quiet meditation music each day during independent reading time.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are an energetic and diverse group of fourth graders. Students in my ELA classes are eager to participate the Sunshine State Young Readers program. This program is a statewide reading motivational program for students in grades 3 through 8, in a collaborative effort between the Florida Association of Media in Education (FAME) and the Florida Department of Education (DOE). The program encourages students to read independently for pleasure and to read books that are on, above, and below their reading level in order to improve their reading fluency. Sunshine State books are selected for their wide appeal, literary value, varied genres, curriculum connections, and/or multicultural representation.

My goal is to incorporate copies of the Sunshine State books into my classroom library to increase student participation in the SSYRA program.

I promote the love of literacy and build the foundation for a lifetime of reading for pleasure. Students are thirsty for an environment that engages them in reading for fun. Several of the books on the SSYRA are books in a series and students go on to read those books as well.

My Project

These books are from the Florida Sunshine State Young Readers Award Nominees specifically for grades 3-5. I have also included picture books and early chapter books from the Sunshine State Young Readers Award Nominees for grades K-2 to meet the diverse independent reading needs of my students. From reading these books, students will promote the books to their peers. In April students will vote for the one book they believe is the best. Each of their votes is sent to the state for the state-wide vote. These books will be passed on to future students for years to come. Additionally, we need speakers to listen to meditation music while reading. Music helps students relax and focus on what they are reading.

Adding a variety of books to the classroom library will promote the love of independent and build the foundation for a love of reading for fun.

When students in elementary school learn to love reading, they will become life-long readers as adults.

All of my students will benefit a great deal from the addition of these books and speakers. I am building an environment in my classroom that will open up the vibrant minds of my 4th graders through independent reading.
