My school is a high-need and, in my opinion, fabulous school in rural North Carolina where incredible students struggle to understand why school is important as well as how they can overcome the social and familial obstacles they face. I have the privilege of teaching and guiding fourth graders as they tackle these issues.

Two years ago, I received my first grant and it supplied me with 24 copies of this novel along with two other novels. My students fell in love with Pictures of Hollis Woods because they identify with both the main character (an orphan named Hollis) as well as the theme of family being people who accept you, faults and all. Sometimes that family does not "look" like the norm, but that is okay. The enthusiasm of those students reverberated throughout our grade level and our school, and now, after a little more than 200 students have read this particular set of novels, they are falling apart.

For this coming school year, it would be great to be able to have a fresh, complete set of novels. With class sizes increasing, we will need more copies of the book and everyone deserves to read one without worrying about key pages missing. Also, these children rarely get new items, so it is of special importance that they see they are valued and trusted enough to use a new copy of something as important as a novel.

Your donation will make it possible for my new students to understand that even if their own family structure is difficult or changes, they can still know, experience and give back love. Seeing a character their age struggle and overcome her own fears makes a tremendous impact. What empowerment they will have from your gift!
