Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I don't have a classroom, but an office. I am our only high school Family Support Specialist in the city of Mesa. I provide resources to our students and parents in our community. Some of those resources include Food and Nutrition, Medical/Dental, Hygiene products. Clothing. Domestic Violence and more. Some of my kids may be homeless, foster or immigrants. I help them with resources and I have supplies, I will provide snacks for breakfast and/or lunch. Some of my kids don't have lunch money and don't eat.
My Project
My role will be providing resources to our students and parents. My schools is the largest in our city with almost 4,000 kids. I prepare Friday Food bags for those kids needing nutrition on the weekends. I provide backpacks with supplies for our new students. Replacement backpacks for those students in need.
My resources may include information on Food/Nutrition, Medical/Dental Care, Parent Portal Classes, Housing/Shelter/Clothing, Legal Assistance, Domestic Violence, and more.
Some of my students come to school on an empty stomach and I will provide them with a breakfast snack to allow them to concentrate in their studies.
When Schools, families and community groups work together to support learning, children tend to do better in school, stay in school longer and like school more.
