Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a first grade teacher at Bronx Charter School for the Arts ("Bronx Arts"), located in the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx. I am need of books for our 45 first graders that depict various types of families in urban communities. I plan to use these books as part of a year-long family themed curriculum.
According to the New York City social studies curriculum guide, the first grade year should be spent studying "Me and My Family." At Bronx Arts, we are exploring the social studies theme of family through our work in the fine arts, as well as in reading and writing. We will begin the year by looking at families through portraiture; then we will collect and share family narratives; and we will end by focusing on the rhythms unique and special to our families' cultures.
We know that children at the ages of five and six enjoy hearing and seeing stories they can identify with personally. As a result, I strive to make available books for my students that reflect their cultural background (Domincan, Puerto Rican, Mexican, and African-American), race (black and Hispanic), and family structure(single-parent family, living with a grandparent, foster care and adoptive situations). By engaging with such themes, my students can gain a better sense of self and a deeper appreciation for their own families. However, to make this unit successful, access to the books is essential.
