I teach in a Title I school, where 98 percent of our students receive free lunch. We are an inclusion classroom, which means that we have both special- and general-education students, and we work in a collaborative, team-teaching setting. The new curriculum in NYC requires students to do extensive reading in school and at home. The majority of our students do not have a wide variety of books on their levels at home. We like to send books home with the children to read on a daily basis. However many of the books get lost or destroyed. We would like to try to keep these books in a sturdy take home bag, so that every child could continue to enjoy reading at home. We are asking for a class set of "Take Home Book Bags" along with a class set of pencils so that the children and their parents may share the great experience of a book. We are also asking for student journals for their writing responses. Our students most often do not have pencils at home and our school supply is very little. The pencils that we do have, or buy ourselves, are needed in the classroom. We would like to give our students their own pencils so they may write a response to the books they have taken home! Thanks for helping us increase our love of reading and writing in our homes!
