Family Play in PreK!

My Students

I teach Pre-K and I absolutely LOVE it. I love being able to be the first school experience for most of them. Many of them have never been in a school setting and are learning to navigate how to make friends while learning new skills. It is because this is just an important year, that I work very hard on making each child feel successful whether they are in person or virtually.

Creating a lasting love for learning is what is most important.

It is such a rewarding moment when something clicks and they light up with joy. Pre-K students love learning and trying new things. We are hands-on with almost everything we do.

My Project

When children play house or use items that spark their imagination, they learn to communicate with one another kindly, to cooperate, develop imaginary play and help develop important social and intellectual skills. Any play they do will especially help support the development of important oral language skills. Skills like sharing, taking turns, fine motor skills and creativity give an opportunity so they can feel free to talk and explore without the fear of being right or wrong. Through this pandemic we have seen a lack of interpersonal skills, due to most of their lives being unable to interact with other kids their own age. A lot of my students were not able to attend Mother’s Day out, church nursery, and many other basic outlets for interaction. We see a huge need to step back and teach our students how to just communicate with each other and with us before we can expect them to learn academic skills.

Using play helps with the development of social, emotional, creative, physical, fine motor and problem-solving skills in children.

These are important skills to develop in early childhood, as they are good markers for overall understanding, but most importantly playing pretend is fun for kids!
