Help me give my students crucial math manipulatives for games they can play at school and supplies to make game kits they can take home to with play with their families.
I am a third grade teacher on an Indian Reservation in Montana where we serve the most wonderful children! We have a very unique population in our school district. Many of our children are members and descendants of the Salish and Kootenai tribes, where heritage and culture run deep and strong and our children are our most valued blessing. In my classroom, our only school rule is, "Be kind!" Along with learning reading, science, technology, math, and other core subject matters, teaching children to be kind and treat each other with respect is the most essential lesson one can teach.
Nearly all of our K-12 students receive free breakfasts and lunches daily.
When children are raised in an area of high poverty, it takes a community of caring parents, teachers, and mentors to bring hope, joy, and encouragement into learning environments for brighter futures. Our purpose and goal is to help every child learn that they can be and will be a vital part of their community, heritage, and culture by learning how to be successful students, excellent readers, and future role models.
My Project
Mastering number fluency is a vital key to excelling in all areas of math! Whether children are learning basic addition and subtraction skills or diving into multiplication and division, understanding number sense is the first step in creating competent math thinkers.
This year I plan to equip my students with mini math game kits they can take home and play with their parents.
Sets of dice, counting tiles, playing cards, and dominoes can all be used to play a wonderful variety of math games at school and at home which will increase number fluency. I also plan to make mini math sets for our STEM Night at K. William Harvey Elementary school this winter.
Students love playing the math games I've introduced so far this year! I want to be able to bring the games into their homes where my students and their family members will all increase their math skills and foster a love of math!
