March is Reading Month is coming soon and our students are super excited! Although literacy is the cornerstone of our K/1 building, we know that there are so many students in our school who don't have books of their very own.
Over 80% of our kindergartners and first graders come from families who struggle on a daily basis to make ends meet.
However, our families are trying their very best and it shows. Our students are fun-loving, cute, hard-working, and appreciative. They are huggers. However, because some parents worry about providing day to day basics, splurging on expensive books is just not a reality. Transportation to the public library can even be problematic for some of our families. That is why many students lack the at-home resources to help them be the best readers they can be. Although we have already started a community book drive to obtain used books, we would also like some new titles that the kids have picked out themselves to really get our students SUPER excited about books during our upcoming Reading Month celebrations!
My Project
Every March, our school hosts a huge Family Literacy Night with a special theme. This year our theme for Reading Month is "Reading is Out of This World!" We expect to welcome in over 100 families for an evening filled with space-themed read-alouds, crafts, games, and healthy eating demonstrations.
Since so many of our students lack resources at home, we create special literacy bags for them filled with books and other education supplies to keep for their very own.
This year, we have picked out two titles that fit perfectly into our theme for the month, one fiction, and one non-fiction.
