I am in need of a small set of digital voice recorders for several exciting, hands-on social studies projects next year.
I teach 11th Grade Humanities and Senior Civics at a small, college prep charter school in San Francisco. My classes are incredibly diverse, including a high number of students with learning disabilities and many students who will be the first in their family to attend college.
The recorders will allow me to support student success in a number of highly engaging and successful projects that develop literacy, presentation and critical thinking skills.
I am requesting the digital recorders for two projects in particular, although they will probably be used for others as well:
1) As part of my 11th Grade Humanities curriculum, we do a "Heritage Project" in which my 50 students study both United States immigration history and their own family's experience in coming to America. We ask the students to do oral interviews with family members for this project which most are unable to record. The digital recorders will allow students, particularly those with disabilities, to record their interviews so that they can more easily use them to complete their project and papers. In addition, I'm hoping we can integrate the recorded voices into multi-media projects.
2) As part of our Senior Civics course, I plan to ask my 25 students to do a Social Justice project in which they identify a social injustice and then go out into the community to research it. For this project, students must work with organizations in the community and conduct interviews. They then write up their research and present it to the broader community at our "Evening of Action". Similar to the above project, the digital recorders will allow students to record their interviews so that they can more easily use them to complete their project and papers. In addition, they will allow students to enhance their multi-media presentations for the "Evening of Action" with voices from people they have worked with or interviewed.
I am requesting a set of 8 RCA digital voice recorders that students can check out individually or in groups while working on their projects.
These two projects are integral to our courses, for they are both highly engaging for students and challenge them to further their thinking and communication skills. These recorders will assist all students, but particularly those with learning disabilities.
