My students need books, story retell pieces, and STEM activities to be included in, "Family Engagement Backpacks" to support their education while developing a love for learning with their families.
My Head Start classroom is full of 15 amazing 3-5 year old children eager to learn. Our classroom makeup consists of many nationalities, languages, family styles, and learning levels. We are situated in a low socioeconomic environment, so not all children have access to books and hands-on materials to continue their learning once they leave school.
The bond my students have together is unimaginable.
At such a young age, they have grown to show compassion and empathy toward one another despite their physical and mental differences. They care for eachother and I couldn't be more honored to be their teacher.
My students learn best when provided an authentic learning environment. Despite how hard their families and our school works to give them that, we need your help to supply them with the materials they need to continue growing both academically and socially.
My Project
I would like to supply each child of my classroom with a, "Family Engagement Backpack" on a weekly turnaround basis. Each backpack will consist of at least one story, corresponding puppets or a stuffed animal, a hands-on family friendly activity, and a reflective journal for the children. The hands-on activity will consist of a variety of STEM, literacy, and fine motor activities appropriate for their learning level.
These backpacks will demonstrate that learning can be engaging and fun!
The backpacks will serve three purposes:
1. Supporting children's academic growth
2. Assisting families in appropriately teaching their children
3. Creating a positive bond between child, parent, and education
Families will witness first-hand that their child's education does not have to be an overwhelming experience. These simple learning activities will set both the child and family up for success once they reach the elementary level. I am thrilled to offer this experience to my preschoolers with your support and witness them grow closer with their families.
This project will fund enough backpacks for 30 weeks of school.
That means if bags are sent home starting in October - every child would experience a different backpack each week until the end of the school year! This will assist in creating the academic foundation they need to succeed in kindergarten.
