Family, Career and Community Leaders Design Hats for Kids in Need
Help me give my students some help with their FCCLA projects. My students are doing a couple of service projects and need help getting the supplies for them. These projects help other kids in our area during winter.
I just moved to Glendive last year and it was my first year of teaching. I inherited a classroom that was a wreck but fell completely in love with all my students.
In this community, drugs, hardships, poverty, and absent parenting is a huge problem.
Last year I spent most of the year just building relationships with students and listening to them. It seemed like no one had ever actually listened before.
Throughout the year the students and I made my classroom into a space to relax and refocus throughout the day whenever tensions were high at school or at home. I want to continue to focus on this because so many of these students are amazing, intelligent and would be completely capable of changing the world if given the chance. These students are all extremely resilient and want a better life. They are all work hard to over come the label of being "those kids" because they know better. I think these kids are a testimony of when you get knocked down you get back up. They are tough, creative, caring, hurt, intelligent, willing, resilient, amazing young people and I can't wait for this next school year!
My Project
My Family, Career and Community Leaders of America students have been doing fundraising and asking for donations in town but I think we have run out of options. My students want to help kids in Eastern Montana that do not have warm outerwear for the winter months. They want to help by crocheting and knitting hats for all ages of kids birth to 18. They will donate all of their projects to a local group that partners with families and schools to help with meeting needs. This project is teaching them some new skills in the textile realm, some math, and just harnessing compassion towards others. They really want to make a difference. So that is why we need the yarn and display boards. Their goal is 100 hats as this year is the first year we are doing this.
The paint is for FCCLA to do some sign marketing and for my Family and Consumer Sciences classes to use for some projects about design and interior design.
