Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Welcome to a wonderful group of about 50 4th and 5th graders in a high-need urban public school. We have limited resources, but make the most of what we have. They are incredible children, hungry for new experiences.

About ten years ago, we received funding to start a Family Book Club to encourage our students to get into the habit of reading for pleasure. I selected books that focused on families from different backgrounds, locales, and times in history. Children sign-up and borrow two books; one for their parents and one for themselves. They read together and talk about the book, then come to school and share a brown bag lunch. It has become a beloved tradition where families get together and share a lunch with their children and other families. It has done a great deal to build community, and it has even revived the parents' interest in reading. We have met 4 times a year, but the students want to add another selection.

Over the years we have "lost" many of our books. We need to replenish our supply so that I can actually send two books home instead of one to share. I had to ask some families to share this year because I ran out of books. This project would bring tears to your eyes as you see all of these folks come together over a great piece of children's literature and talk about very important issues. If we don't receive more books to loan out over the years, we may have to stop the program.

Please consider supporting this wonderful program that encourages reading for pleasure with our students and parents. It has proven its worth over time, and I'd hate to see it wane due to lack of materials. These families have made it a success. Please help us along. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
