My students are middle school students in grades 6-8 in a 6-12 grade school. The student population is a diverse mixture of Spanish, African American and Caucasian students. My students share a common interest in sports and science. They also enjoy creating a variety of art projects and look forward to working on their art projects daily. My students do not currently have a music class or a stage for student performances due to recent budget constraints. The art class they attend daily for 1/2 a year is the only "Art" class they will attend in middle school. Many of my students struggle with the positive development of their social skills. My students need to have positive, meaningful, learning experiences while working in small groups collaboratively to help them learn and develop their social skills.
I love how my students are interested and highly motivated to explore art materials and create art.
We have many activities in art class but art making is their favorite! Many students take extra steps beyond the project criteria because they are intrinsically motivated to learn and take pleasure and pride in completing the work.
Students and families really enjoy time spent together at events that are hosted at our school. I am interested and excited about creating a "Family and Friends" paint night. Students, family members and staff will be encouraged to come and explore their artistic abilities together in a beginners painting lesson. The lesson will be taught step by step, previous experience will not be required.
Family involvement is really important for student success.
SMSA can develop this area by providing more opportunities for parents to meet teachers and interact in the school and classrooms. This event will help to strengthen positive bonds between students, parents and staff. Families in my area may not be able to afford expensive nights out. This event will provide the materials and fun in a well-supervised, creative atmosphere.
My students will need need basic acrylic painting supplies for the event. Over half of the materials will be reusable for future paint nights. This night will be fun and rewarding for students and parents. Students and parents will each take home their own painted canvas and a memory that will last a lifetime. This will be a rewarding and unique experience for students, parents and staff. We will learn with each other and about each other as we participate in this art making event.
