Our students live in a suburb of a large southern city. Our school qualifies as a Title I school and my students all qualify for free or reduced lunch. The students in my integrated general education and special needs kindergarten class love to learn and come in every day eager to explore and discover.
The excitement and openness of five and six year olds ready to soak up knowledge is contagious!
We build on the readiness of our students to create an environment with materials and tools ready to bring them to the next level of learning. My students are ready to be challenged!
My Project
The students in my Title 1 school typically do not have books at home to read. A vital piece of any reading program is sharing the reading acquisition process with families. I want to gather materials that will enable the families of my students to read with their kindergarteners. My students’ parents want to work with their children but lack the financial means to fund the materials such as books, technology, and reading games, needed to do so. Scholastic Magazines, decodable readers , and phonemic awareness games can be take-home materials to enable families to work together to develop reading skills. A wide range of take-home language arts materials would put the tools of reading into the hands of eager parents wanting to help their children.
