I currently teach first grade. The students are excited every day to be in school. The students come from low-income households. At school, I want to give them every opportunity to learn and explore. They love that they are learning to add and subtract in math. Also, students are currently beginning to read! This is very exciting and they try and read everything they can from posters to books.
The children and families in our school community are a diverse cross-section of many different cultures, ethnic groups, and languages.
We have an English as a Second Language Program. We educate children from 24 different countries, who speak 15 different languages. The students speak Bosnian, Spanish, Arabic, Albanian, Russian, Ukrainian, Sudanese, Somalian, Swahili, French, Kirundi, Bantu, Burmese, Vietnamese, Nepali, and Mai-Mai.
My Project
Help give my students books to take home and read with their families. This will give students readable books when they are at home. The books selected are books the students can read and there are different levels. Which will allow all students a chance to read on their reading level.
The coupons to Scholastic will allow students to select books based on their level and interest.
Allowing all students to have individual books. This will encourage the students to want to read and build a love for reading by having books that they are able to read by themselves to their families.
