I'm a first year teacher with a wonderfully diverse class. I have a total of 26 kids, who are all unique and special. When my students come to school I want them to enjoy learning. I don't want them to think about all the work they are doing but about all the new information they are obtaining.
My kiddos are not only resilient to the circumstances they face on a daily basis but they have grown so much this year emotionally and mentally.
Our class has not always been the way it is now. We have worked hard to create a sense of familia, family in Spanish, throughout the year. My kiddos enjoy coming to school and getting to learn new information.
My class has finally understood that its about determination and persistence when it comes to learning. It's about enjoying the process of learning. It's about learning to love the hard times because they make us stronger. Its about making mistakes because they help us to grow. My kiddos have grown so much not just educationally but socially growing into kind, compassionate, and caring little adults.
I enjoy teaching my students Spanish and the word familia is Spanish for family. I refer to our class as a family, a familia that gets to be together for a whole year! My students love learning Spanish words and I incorporate them every single day into our daily routines. However, we currently don't have anywhere where we can have talks when we need to do circle or important family meetings.
I would love to have familia time in a space that is specifically designated for bringing us back to together or for fixing what needs to be broken.
I think that a bilingual carpet is perfect for our familia time. I believe that teaching students is more than just math, english, writing, etc. They need to be able to solve and critically think about their problems in a safe place. I believe that having a space in the classroom where we can do that will strengthen our current and future classes community.
