This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
With a new school and a fairly new teacher, my students do not have a large library of books to choose from. I want them to LOVE reading in the same way I did as a kid.
My students attend a West Philadelphia Charter School.
The school is a newly remodeled church and convent- its beautiful! My students will be entering first grade this Fall. The class is comprised of 14 boys and 11 girls on all reading levels.
My Project
The resources I chose are all related literacy and math. The collections of reading books are primarily nonfiction. With the new Common Core standards, first graders are required to read 50% fiction and 50% nonfiction books. These books would expose my students to literature beyond fiction and open their eyes to a whole new world of reading! The language arts games will provide my class with a few fun and engaging activities to complete in reading centers.
Think back to the first book you couldn't put down.
My students need, and deserve, to have that experience with books too. Your help will allow my students to fall in love with reading!
