My students come from a medium size town in the midwest. We have one major factory in town that just became international and as a result we now have an influx of students from places like Puerto Rico. Before this change, we were not a very diverse school. The change has been amazing, and leaving us adults looking for more books and ways of communicating information and experiences that can be windows and mirrors for our students. Moreover, seeking out more books in other languages as well.
My students are the best kids in the entire world.
They are thoughtful, kind, energetic, and full of curiosity. They work hard and they do their best. I love being part of their lives.
This being said, they lack a lot of diverse and rich experiences. Moreover, the students that are coming in with this new factory usually do not speak any English. We are finding more and more of our students live below the poverty line and lack experiences like the zoo, museums, and such that we teachers take for granted some time. We need more books and opportunities for our students to learn more about life and other cultures.
My Project
These books will continue to enhance the print-rich classroom that I strive to create, even with my students at home! All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind; I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading. Students will be able to choose books, which will help them continue to enjoy independent reading time. Then when we can meet virtually, they can break into groups to discuss them.
With these new books, my students will be able to choose from a variety of books that will allow them to read independently at their own grade level.
They will also be able to choose books that interest them. The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these books will continue to help my students grow stronger in reading. These are uncertain times, I think it would be great if they could get lost in a book they love for a while.
