Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 1st grade classroom is full of busy, eager learners. While all of my students come from diverse backgrounds, we learn about and embrace our ethnic and cultural differences to make our learning environment a richer place to engage their inquisitive minds.
Many of my students come from low-income backgrounds, but regardless of the challenges they face, they show up each and every day eager to learn.
Each day is an adventure with my students. Their bright and inquisitive minds never stop with questions about the world. They are such caring, empathetic children who will stop to save a millipede that lost its way in the classroom or admire a butterfly that crosses their path. Then, they discuss what they saw and ask questions to understand further. While they are challenged with learning deficits and attention deficits, they work hard to achieve results.
My Project
Read Alouds are such a quintessential part of our curriculum and often times, they will reach those students who have little interest in reading or may have given up on finding a "good book". Read Aloud time is special in our class because it gives the students a chance to hear a new book come to life and be reminded that there are some truly great stories out there, sometimes even with characters just like them.
My project is about bringing fresh, new read-aloud books to my students to strengthen their core reading skills and further nurture a true love of reading.
My students become so excited when a new book comes to the carpet each day and they scramble to grab it during their independent reading time to read it again. This set of books that include titles like The Word Collector and Wolf in the Snow will allow me to introduce my students to new and invigorating titles for months and months to come.
