Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a life skills class at the high school level. I love my students because they are hard workers, they enjoy learning, and they are so much fun! I continue to be amazed on a daily basis watching them overcome their individual challanges to succeed academically, socially, and vocationally.
Our program currently has 22 special needs students ranging in age from 14-21.
Our students have disabilities such as: downs syndrome, various levels of autism, and many other mental and physical disabilities.
My Project
Our school was impacted by Hurrican Harvey. Our tables and chairs were old and in bad shape before, but now they are rusting and several have cracked frames. We have had to discard chairs this year because they broke. This is a safety issue for our students and we don't have enough tables and chairs to accommodate all of our students and staff. We need these activity tables and chairs while performing group tasks such as: craft projects, assembling blessing in a bag, working on cooking skills, social activities during the day, folding laundry, academics, and performing other vocational activities for our community and school.
