My students need materials, including Brick and K'Nex, to create a collaborative work space for making, learning, exploring and sharing which will encourage hands-on learning and promote critical thinking skills in the library.
Our objective is for the library to be the hub of our school where students and teachers come to learn, anticipate, engage, and focus on making things that stretch their minds and support critical thinking beyond textbook learning. We strive for it to be an important place for on-site, individualized, and teacher directed learning and student practice. We continue looking for ways to create, adapt, and use a student centered library.
We have a population of over 400 with 48% qualifying for free or reduced lunch.
Students from low socioeconomic households are at greater risk for falling behind and disengaging in school. These students need to become collaborative critical thinkers and creative innovators in order to become successful adults in today's world.
My Project
Our library Makerspace will give our students the opportunity to brainstorm, invent, design, and build together. While working collaboratively, they will test their creations, improve them, and test them again. For instance, the Bricks and KNEX kits will inspire and challenge them to create structures as a team. In addition, kids are crazy about magnets, and I anticipate that the magnet kits will spark a sense of wonder, creativity, and group discussion in our library. We want students to look forward to their visits to the library, and the materials that I am requesting will by the catalyst to encourage that anticipation.
Our student centered library space will expose them to critical 21st century skills in the field of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
At Finger Lake Elementary, our mission is to prepare students for success. By improving and updating our library space, FLE will be able to honor the learning drive and spirit of our students.
