The students at this school, a Title I school in an urban area, come from a variety of backgrounds. We are a magnet elementary school with a new theme of play and ingenuity, and with that comes an increase in the number of ways in which students are able to explore, create and take risks in their learning.
The Building A Story domain course is an expansion of the popular engineering electives that have been offered, and incorporates literature, engineering design challenges with reading and writing.
The resources in this project are needed to fully implement the curriculum, and provide hands on resources.
My Project
The Fairy Tale, Tall Tale and Fable kits in this grant would allow for the Building A Story course to be offered which integrate children's literature with engineering design projects, and provide another pathway for students who may not otherwise engage in engineering exploration to be introduced to the fundamentals of this discipline. This course was designed to merge emergent literacy skills with critical thinking and problem solving through read alouds, readers theater and writing in conjunction with the engineering design process. The kits in this grant will scaffold the learning experiences for younger students, and allow them to gain an understanding through hands on resources.
