Teacher Bell from Brunswick GA is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need books, like Nutcracker and Rapunzel, to read during DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) time. My students love to read; so why not let them read fairy tales!

Reading is the fundamental road block for all learning. I want to provide an atmosphere where reading is not viewed as laborious but as taking a trip. I'm reminded of the story, "Oh the places you can go." I remind my students that when money is short, you can go anywhere you want to go, in a book.
My students come from all walks of life.
Some have learning difficulties, are poverty stricken, others have language barriers inhibiting their learning. While all of this is still very prevalent in their everyday lives, they still have a desire to know and learn more. They have a drive to be more than their circumstances say they are and more than what their community looks like. Although they have been written off by some of the most important people in their lives, they still come to me everyday with a zest to prove those who have written them off wrong. The school where we work (me teaching and them learning), is an older school and we serve some of the neediest students and families in this city. We try to provide food and gifts during the holidays, as well as during the school year, that are provided by our partners to our families that are in need. Although my students have huge obstacles to face, I give them all that I can and they know that I will expect nothing but the same.
The resources that I am requesting are children's books. They are mostly fairy tales. Having these resources will change my students' lives because most of them have never heard of a great many of these titles. These are books that helped me to learn to read and have a love for reading growing up. In addition, I believe having these books will help the students to use their imagination more. They do not know how to imagine because everything in their world is so concrete. Utilizing these books will help them to see that using your imagination is okay. One activity that I would have my students do with these books is, write a short paragraph about what it is like to be one of the fairy tale characters. They would have to describe what it is like to be that character and what their day is like. In addition, they would then have to dress up like their character and present their writing to the class.
Exposure to various reading genres is important for the students that I serve.
It will help them to learn how to read and use their imagination in the process. Because they live in a world where everything is so real and concrete, they need to be able to experience what it is like to imagine themselves in another situation unlike their own. I believe when my students get exposure to the titles that I have selected, they will be better readers and people which will have an impact on the world.
