Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our small school is located in Northeast, DC. Our students come from a range of socioeconomic backgrounds. Our scholars enjoy learning, but face many challenges in their day to day life outside of school. Our school is 100% Title I.

Our students need more access to hands-on STEM activities to increase their exposure to STEM in a fun and engaging way.

The teachers and staff at our school are extremely committed to the students and work hard to mitigate the traumas that children experience outside of school. However, there is limited funding for extras and staff fund raise or contribute to stretch our school budget.

My Project

Our students have recently been introduced to fun STEM/STEAM activities in the library. When collaborating with teachers I look to find engaging ways to extend their learning in a non traditional manner. STEM/STEAM challenges are a way to make that happen.

STEM/STEAM challenges and hands on activities are such a huge part of student learning.

Often time constraints in the classroom often prohibit open ended exploration. Allowing students to have that time in the library is key.

Students need to have a sense of agency when it comes to their learning. I want them to problem solve and come up with various solutions to problems. This will enable them to do so.
