Fair Play and Tolerance Go Hand in Hand

My students need a variety of Reading Comprehension board games.

Mrs. May Windsor Hill Elementary School
N. Charleston, SC Grades 3-5

Everyday, I welcome 30 fourth graders to my Reading lab. My 4th grade students are all "At-Risk" Readers. 85% of them have behavior problems, making them "At-Risk" socially. They are disruptive to their own learning process. My students come from "High Crime" neighborhood and often lack tolerance for things and people that are different. This problem is obvious in group work, when they display lack of respect for each other. When we play simple groups games, such as Jeopardy, they quickly display anger, and say nasty things to each other. Too many of my students have not been taught, and have not had the opportunity to practice "Fair Play". My boys need to practice tolerance by playing simple games in small groups, before they can do large groups. Because they are "at risk" readers, the games need to have an academic focus. They need board games to help them learn how to wait their turn without rude comments and grunts. They need practice working in a small group, and following simple rules that teach fair play. I am convinced that "Tolerance" is what our World needs. It begins with children. Respect for each other, other cultures, and a sense of Fair Play must be taught, especially to children from High Crime neighborhoods.
