Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Despite teaching social studies, I attempt to make my lessons and instruction as cross-curricular as possible integrating aspects of STEM and the arts in order to target the engagement of various students whose initial interest might not be history. This approach also allows for my teaching of history, which at times is considered a dull, lecture-ridden subject, to become an interactive, hands-on content, in which students apply historical and other cross-curricular STEM skills to achieve their comprehension of the historical concepts and life skills.
A significant quote from a retired teacher, that drives my instruction and philosophy is, "I always made my classes fun, because I had to be there too." This I believe is crucial for engaging students and fostering the relationship of learning with students and creating an welcoming environment.
If the teacher is as excite to learn and complete these lessons, then it will transfer onto the students. I believe that through the incorporate of this philosophy alongside STEM and artistic lessons, students can be engaged in a hands-on approach that makes history fun and interactive.
My Project
The 2018 Space Exploration Educators Conference hosted by NASA's Johnson Space Center is a three day conference for kindergarten to 12th grade teachers. The conference features presenters and sessions from NASA's scientists, astronauts, and other STEM leaders and professionals. The goal of the conference is to use the study of space to teach across the curriculum through classroom ideas and experiences that are minds-on and hands-on.
By having the opportunity to attend this 24th annual conference, I believe I will be able to enrich the lessons with an increase of cross-curricular approaches that will increase student engagement and help them learn and practice STEAM skills useful in their future careers.
The conference strives to demonstrate how these concepts of STEAM can be incorporated seamlessly into lessons that are conducted in other subjects, like history and the arts. One idea, I would hope to learn to incorporate or learn more about, would be that of the use of space photography from satellites and probes and their use and optimization using visual art technology and software to determine and highlight the composition of elements within objects, like nebulas and distant stars.
