My students walk in to school every day with a smile on their face and eagerness in their hearts. They may not come from the same backgrounds, cultures or socioeconomic statuses, but they come together in my classroom as one big family. We are located in a high poverty district with lots of obstacles to overcome, but my students do not let that hold them back.
After Hurricane Michael devastated our community, many of my students had to leave town and new students have come in from areas that were unlivable.
Each and every one of them are still determined to be successful in school. Many of these students do not have books they can read at their homes, so the books I have in my classroom are sometimes the only books they get to read.
With all the clean up that has to be done in our town (which will most likely take quite some time), my students and their families only normal routine is coming to school. I am striving to make that normal, the absolute best normal I can!
My Project
This project will enable my students to learn their third grade math facts in a flash. The Hot Dots flash cards will be used during their small group math time.
Students will be able to work in small groups or pairs to master their math facts with the Hot Dots pen and card sets.
Many of my students have not been able to have a normal afternoon/night time routine since Hurricane Michael. Most of them have lost everything that they owned and have not been able to concentrate on their normal every day tasks.
With this project, they will be able to master their math facts in a fun and exciting way. The Hot Dots pen will give them immediate feedback on which facts they need to practice again, they will be able to focus on those facts for homework and down time in the classroom.
When my students master specific facts, they will move onto the next set until they have mastered all their addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts. They will also have the opportunity to work on telling time, counting money, and identifying fractions.
