When I became a teacher, my goal was to have the students that come into my class year after year become great learners. However, I was unaware of the impact they would actually have on my learning. They have taught me so much. Their determination, perseverance, empathy, and joy have inspired me to want to be the best at what I do. They have a lot of unfair challenges in their young lives, but you would never know it by the way they act. Their circumstances do not define who they are, or who they are going to be. Every day the students that come into my room represent many races including Hispanic, Caucasian, and African American. They come from homes with single parents, working parents, and some with extended family members living with them. Most of them also come from low income families that receive free and reduced lunches.
I am lucky that we all belong to a school that puts students first and nurtures them beyond just academics.
Our staff has a personal and professional interest in seeing each of them grow and succeed with their own goals.
My Project
Students do not always come into 2nd grade with the skills they need to start the year. One of the main skills I see lacking in most students is basic addition and subtraction fact fluency. Just like phonics is the foundation for learning how to read, fact fluency is the foundational skill required to be successful in math. Gone are the days of drill a kill time tests. Students these days need more engagement, and technology is an added bonus.
Reflex Math is a proven instructional tool that gives students confidence in building their fact fluency.
It is engaging, fun, and delivers instruction in a way that helps them with the facts they are struggling with. I have used it in the past and really saw my students that year benefit from its use, and they did better with their math assessments.
