Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a 6th grade teacher in the Bronx. My class consists of 30 students from the neighborhood near my school. They range in ethnicity and age (from 11-14 in some cases).
I teach English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, and Enrichment. I am their primary teacher. In my school, the 6th grade students are self-contained becasue we are too overcrowded to have them switch for classes.
I just had an amazing week workshop with an orginization called Facing History. Their mission is to help learn from history and realize that what people did in the past consisted of choices and not just a predestined event. I hope to take this idea and have my students grow as a community and as an individual so they think about choices they make and realize that their choices do affect the future.
One strong aspect of this workshop was the amount of resources they provide in the way of videos and dvds. I already know that there are many different videos that would engage my students and cause them to ask questions. They are not those traditional "lets learn about this place or time through a movie" video. To me, they are the springboard for deeper thought.
In my school, the tvs and vcr/dvd players are scarce. Having one consistently in my classroom would allow me to have the flexibility of teaching social studies and any other course I need to with these audio/visual aides.
I appreciate anyone who takes a look at my proposal. My students are used to an environment that does not go past their few blocks. I want them to learn about the world around them and as people who are soon becoming teens, teach them about making choices and how they affect the world around them.
